You know those moms who seem to always have a gorgeous, well kept house? Well, that’s not me! I bet it’s not you either. In fact, I mainly clean to keep myself from going off the deep end. The mess and clutter give me anxiety. My husband knows that I can’t leave the house or enjoy the day if I know certain things will be at home lurking there, and waiting for me!
There are certain thing I have to do every day or I end up feeling overwhelmed by the end of the week. Here’s a list of those daily chores that might help you relax a little, and feel like your house isn’t in utter chaos. Enjoy!
Dishes
As we all know, Moms are the only ones who know how to work the dishwasher. Every morning and/or evening, I collect the dirty dishes that are overflowing from the sink and onto the counter top, and I put them in the dishwasher. I then run it and put them away. Then I fill it up again; because more dishes have usually magically appeared on the counter by this time.
Laundry
Usually, while the dish washer is running, I walk around the house from room to room and pick up everyone’s dirty laundry that gets left in little piles everywhere. This is usually enough to fill our washer at least every day. When all 4 of the kids are here, it is definitely every day. Once it is full, I run it. This is usually followed by forgetting it is in there and hoping it’s not mildewed by the time I switch it into the dryer. Somewhere towards the end of the day, and after an extra run through the dryer, I’ll fold them and put them away.
Like clockwork, if my husband is home, he will ask if I need help. My daughter will also beg to help. I tell my husband no because he knows he doesn’t fold anything “right”. Then, I let my 5 year old help me by putting away her clothes after I have folded them and taught her where they go. I put away my clothes and my husbands clothes. Last, if the boys are with us (11 and 13) I make a nice pile of their clean clothes and proceed to dump them on their lap while they are playing call of duty or hide behind walls and throw them at them.
Sweeping
A year ago, we ripped up the nasty, dog-pee stained carpet that was in the house when I bought it and replaced it with wood laminate. It looks gorgeous! But, everywhere you step, you can feel that amazing Florida sand stuck to your feet. Then you track that sand all over the house. It was kind of nice with carpet, you didn’t know how nasty the floor really got because it would sift through the carpet and sit hiding on the concrete underneath. It was a false sense of clean and I miss it a little.
So, now I try to sweep every day or at least when I can see the dirt and/or dust glistening in the sunlight through the sliding glass door.
Trash
Yes, I take out the trash every day! We have a 5 month old in diapers and somehow produce enough trash to fill a landfill every month. I could cut down on the trash if I stopped using paper plates; but I hate dishes even more than trash! So, I go from room to room and empty all the trash cans into the main one in the kitchen and carry it out to the trash can by the garage. Another perk to doing this daily is that you can get away with using the really cheap trash bags without worrying about them ripping and dripping unknown substances in a trail behind you! WIN!
